Winchester Cathedral hosts student fashion show in bold debut

5/27/2026 · News

Graduates from Winchester School of Art transformed the historic cathedral into a runway, showcasing 100 designs to 400 guests. Twelve collections earned spots at Graduate Fashion Week, as students took full control of the event for the first time.

Winchester Cathedral became an unlikely catwalk on Friday night when 25 final-year students from Winchester School of Art (WSA) unveiled 100 garments in the institution’s first-ever graduate fashion show held within the ancient walls.

Key Points

  • ✅ First time WSA held its graduate fashion show at Winchester Cathedral
  • ⚡ Twelve collections selected for Graduate Fashion Week in London
  • 💡 Students organised the entire event independently for the first time

The cathedral, normally silent save for choir rehearsals and tourist footsteps, pulsed with music and motion as models glided past towering stone columns. Matthew Coats, WSA’s fashion design programme lead and a former Chanel designer under Karl Lagerfeld, called the quality of the work “extremely high.” “Each graduate shows real promise,” he said. “The cathedral provides an inspiring and impressive backdrop that elevates their creative work.”

Grace Cowan, 21, the student-led show planner, said the decision to move the event from the university gallery to the cathedral changed everything. “We wanted something unforgettable,” she said. “Standing here, looking at 400 people in this space, it feels like we’ve already made it.” The audience included industry professionals, local councillors and fashion influencers.

Jiaheng Liu, 21, who goes by Augustin, will begin a Master’s at the Institut Français de la Mode in Paris this autumn. His collection, Couture of Them, reimagines masculine identity through digital craftsmanship. “I learned how to find my own voice and develop it within the industry,” he said. Nuo Xu, 23, who will study at London College of Fashion, was named a Talent of Tomorrow by Graduate Fashion Week and featured in Drapers and The Cold Magazine. Her collection Suspended Memory merges wartime trauma, architectural power and rebellious aesthetics.

💡 Pro Tip

Emerging designers should treat university showcases as both a portfolio piece and a networking hub—invite local press, buyers, and alumni to build early industry relationships.

The judging panel drew from WSA’s alumni network: Saskia Norris, product developer at Passenger; Isabella Kilshaw of Boden; YouTube influencer Rosie Calwell; and Victoria Suffield, owner of The Hambledon. They assessed innovation, craftsmanship and market potential.

📋 By The Numbers

  • 100 garments — Total designs showcased across 25 collections
  • 12 selections — Number of collections invited to Graduate Fashion Week
  • 3 days — Duration of the BA Degree Show, June 5–10

The cathedral event underscored a broader shift at WSA: students now lead every aspect of the graduate showcase, from curation to casting to social media strategy. That autonomy, Coats said, is part of a deliberate push to prepare designers for industry realities. “They’re not just making clothes,” he said. “They’re building brands.”

The public can view the full BA Degree Show from June 5 to 10, offering a final glimpse at the next generation of fashion talent emerging from the historic university town.
