The A272 Petersfield Road was shut down for three hours Sunday afternoon after a motorcyclist suffered life-changing injuries in a head-on collision with a Volvo XC40. Emergency services raced to the scene near Cheesefoot Head between Winchester and Cheriton just after 4 p.m., where they found the rider of a red and blue Honda CBR600 unconscious in the roadway.

Witnesses described the impact as “deafening,” with the sound of metal crumpling and glass shattering audible from up to 200 metres away.
