Burley Park transformed into a canine paradise Saturday and Sunday as Dogstival drew crowds of barking revelers and their human companions. Over 2,000 dogs registered for the event, which organizers said was among the largest of its kind in the UK. Temperatures soared to 23°C, perfect for a festival where the guest of honor had four legs and a tail.

At the heart of the festival was a 50-meter stretch of artificial beach, complete with imported sand and shallow pools for paddling. Unlike natural UK beaches, which often ban dogs during peak season, this pop-up shore was entirely off-limits to humans. Pooches dug, sprinted, and rolled with abandon, their joy palpable even to onlookers from a distance.

The beach wasn’t the only draw. A dedicated flyball course saw dogs leap over hurdles to snatch tennis balls mid-air, their handlers cheering from the sidelines. Adjacent agility tunnels tested speed and precision, while a 10-foot adventure playground—complete with ramps and platforms—challenged even the most agile terriers. Judges awarded ribbons in three categories: Best Trick, Fastest Obstacle Clearing, and Most Enthusiastic Digger.

Food stations dotted the park, serving up dog-friendly delicacies. Owners sampled homemade strawberry-and-cream yogurt cups for their pets, while others indulged their dogs in frozen blueberry popsicles. A cocktail bar, staffed by veterinary-approved mixologists, offered ‘puppy lattes’—espresso-free blends of coconut milk, pumpkin puree, and a hint of honey. ‘Owners were lining up for hours,’ said festival coordinator Clara Whitmore. ‘Some even brought their dogs in wheelchairs to ensure everyone could join the fun.’

Not all was play. Organizers enforced strict cleanliness rules: waste stations were emptied every 30 minutes, and any dog exhibiting aggression was immediately removed.
